Games sector

This is Games. This is Wales.

We are passionate about growing the games sector in Wales.

We are incredibly proud of Wales' homegrown games studios and we have a proven track record in providing the support games companies need to achieve global success. Our targeted support, including development and scale up funding, has given Welsh indie studios the boost they need and a number of them have gone on to impress international audiences and industry, releasing popular titles like Sker Ritual and collaborating with global companies like Ubisoft.

We offer a warm Welsh welcome to games companies looking to base their operations here. We invite you to explore what Wales can offer you and your games company, from bespoke funding packages to tailored, expert support.

  • Launch your games studio in Wales

Join our growing games ecosystem. Our experienced specialist team can guide you through the entire process. Whatever your unique needs, from financing your next move, to helping you to find the right studio space, we're here to help.

Your money can go further in Wales, with house prices 30% lower than the UK average, and competitively priced commercial property.

Co-working spaces can be found right across Wales. Tramshed Tech continues to grow, expanding from Cardiff to Newport and more recently Swansea.  Offering spaces for start-ups in welcoming communities of likeminded individuals, providing business mentoring, accelerator programmes and many other support functions.

Alongside space for startups, we also have the infrastructure for global players. Wales has become one of Europe’s most attractive destinations for data centre investment with its combination of strong data connectivity and proximity to London. The Vantage Data Centre operates its largest hyperscale data centre in Wales, while Microsoft has invested heavily in building a next-generation AI-enabled data centre in Newport.

Wales’ more balanced pace of life is ideal for entrepreneurs and families looking for breathing space.  Surrounded by National Parks, coastal walks and areas of outstanding natural beauty on your doorstep, it’s so easy to swap screen time for green time.

  • Access bespoke support to take your project to the next level

The Welsh Government via our team here at Creative Wales can offer a bespoke funding package to companies setting up in Wales.

For example, Wales is a proud home to US Games company Rocket Science, who chose Cardiff as the location for its European HQ. Following financial and practical support from the Welsh Government and Creative Wales, Rocket Science brought its brilliant back-end expert engineering co-development skills here to Wales.

We can offer games companies support for capital investment and aid for job creation and regularly offer other funding opportunities including:

Development funding enabling studios to allocate resources and hire freelancers to produce a short playable demo and a high-quality pitch deck.

Scale up funding supporting game studios registered in Wales to present to investors and publishers to seek investment for full production.

Production funding for businesses creating digital content aimed at International audiences.

We take pride in each business we support, and we want to see them all succeed. We maintain strong personal relationships with each of our businesses and share every opportunity available to help them on their way to achieving their goals.

Ready to create something incredible in Wales?

Rocket Science Group

When Rocket Science Group - a global leader in game co-development and multiplayer engineering - sought opportunities to expand its business into Europe, our expert team were on hand to help make that happen.

Back in 2022, CEO Tom Daniel connected with the Creative Wales team at the Game Developers Conference. He knew instantly that Wales would offer the perfect base for the expanding company.

With our support and guidance, Rocket Science was able to secure support from the Welsh Government, opening its UK and European base in Cardiff in August 2023.

Since its Cardiff launch, the Rocket Science Group has gone on to respond to the needs of the market in several ways, diversifying the business further to launch additional services under three sub-brands: Terminal Velocity, Atomic Theory and Super Collider.

To date, the Rocket Science Group has employed some 50 people across its new location and is an important economic driver in Wales, even branching out with the launch of Space Rangers, a dedicated recruitment and talent service to resource the sector.
